Beside the Still Waters in the Garden of Dreams
The subject of this painting is Magnolia Gardens, near Charleston, South Carolina. Silva visited this particular location many times during his artistic career, which did not start until he was nearly fifty years old. After leaving his family’s ceramics business in 1907, Silva undertook his course of training in France, where he quickly became adept in the manner of Impressionist plein air landscape painting. Recognition followed Silva back to the United States, with several awards and public exhibitions of his work. Although he made California his primary home for the next thirty-five years, Silva often revisited the Southeast, maintaining close connections to the Southern States Art League and with his hometown of Savannah, Georgia.
